Chesterman Beach

North and South Chesterman are one continuous stretch of white sand, over 2.7 km end to end according to the District of Tofino's own beaches page, split visually by a tombolo, a sandbar that only shows at low tide and joins the beach to Frank Island. Tourism Tofino's own beach guide notes tide pools along the stretch and a carving shed near the Wickaninnish Inn, and it flags both ends of the beach as popular for surf lessons, which is a fair warning if you are here for a quiet walk rather than a class.

The name most visitors search, Chesterman Beach, is the settler-era name still used on maps, road signs and every booking site. The Indigenous place names above are the Tla-o-qui-aht names for the same stretch of coast, and using both, old name first, matches how the beach is actually signed and searched.

Lynn Road, The North Access

Lynn Road reaches North Chesterman Beach directly, the access point closest to the northern stretch of sand and the section of coast where the Multi-Use Path meets the beach. Public washrooms and shower facilities sit at this access point, useful after a cold-water swim or a surf lesson, since the water here runs cold year-round even on a sunny day. The Multi-Use Path also reaches this end on foot or by bicycle, so a car is not required if you are staying in town or along the beach strip, and cycling in avoids the parking fee entirely.

Chesterman Beach Road, The South Access

Chesterman Beach Road reaches South Chesterman, the end closer to the Wickaninnish Inn and the carving shed Tourism Tofino names on its own beach page. It also has its own washrooms and showers, so either end works as a full beach stop rather than a quick look. This is the closer access point if the Frank Island sandbar is the destination, since South Chesterman sits nearer the crossing point than the Lynn Road end.

At low tide, the sandbar joining Chesterman Beach to Frank Island is dry enough to walk across, and it is the single most photographed feature of this beach. What most first-time visitors do not realize is that Frank Island itself is privately owned, with resident access only, per the District of Tofino's own beaches page. The public right is the walk across the sandbar and the beach around its edge, not the island's interior or its houses.

Check a tide table before you plan the crossing: the sandbar narrows and eventually submerges as the tide comes in, and getting caught on the island side means either a wait or a wet walk back.

Chesterman is one of Tofino's two main surf beaches alongside Cox Bay, and both ends are popular for lessons, per Tourism Tofino's own guide. That popularity is also the safety flag: this is open Pacific water, not a sheltered swimming beach. There have been no lifeguards or Surf Guards on any Pacific Rim area beach since 2012, when federal funding for the service ended, and Parks Canada's current guidance, which the District's town beaches follow in practice, is that every beach on this coast is unsupervised.

Rip currents are real here and the water is cold year-round.
