Tofino Sunset: Where To Watch It

The District of Tofino's own beaches page is the only official Tofino source that names sunset directly, and it does so for Tonquin Beach: the trail's small lookouts have views of Wickaninnish Island and sunsets, in the District's own words. The trail itself is short, about 250 metres per Tourism Tofino's figure, with two sets of stairs and a wooden bridge, reachable on foot from downtown. Because it is close to the village and named specifically, it draws more evening foot traffic than the open beaches south of town.

Chesterman Beach And Cox Bay

Neither beach is named by an official source specifically for sunset, but both face the open Pacific with nothing between the sand and the horizon, which is the actual mechanism that makes any Tofino sunset work. Chesterman is the wider, more general-purpose option, while Cox Bay's crescent shape and bigger surf give a more dramatic foreground if there is any swell running. Long Beach, Inside The Park

Long Beach has the widest uninterrupted horizon of any beach in the area, since it runs about 16 km with no headland breaking the sightline, but it sits inside Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, which means a US$8.69 (C$12.25) day pass per adult rather than free town parking. No official Tofino source publishes exact sunset clock times by month, and this site prints none rather than guess at a figure nobody has confirmed. What decides a good evening on this coast is weather, not the calendar: Tofino's cloud cover is heaviest from October through March, when the wettest months bring low, thick cloud that can erase a sunset entirely, and lightest in July and August, the driest months of the year. A partly cloudy evening, rather than a fully clear one, often gives the most colour, since the cloud catches the light the clear sky does not.

Every beach on this page loses light fast once the sun is down, and none of them has lifeguards or on-site lighting, since there have been no lifeguards on any Pacific Rim area beach since 2012. Bring a light for the walk back, whether that is the short Tonquin stairs or the longer walk back from Chesterman or Cox Bay's parking lots, and watch the tide if you are anywhere near the Frank Island sandbar at Chesterman, which submerges as the evening tide comes in. A few rules shape what you can and cannot do on a Tofino beach after the light starts to fade. Dogs are welcome on all District beaches, but they must stay on a leash at all times. This protects the migratory shorebirds that use the sand as a resting point.

Alcohol is prohibited on all public property in Tofino, beaches included, at any time of day, so leave the drinks at your accommodation. Overnight or free camping in a vehicle is not allowed anywhere in public Tofino, and that includes beach parking lots, streets and the sand itself. If you were hoping to film the sunset from the air, know that drone use is legally restricted across the District because of the nearby Tofino Harbour Water Aerodrome and the Tofino-Long Beach Airport (YAZ).

Fireworks, including consumer fireworks and firecrackers, are permitted only between 5 pm and midnight on five designated days a year: 1 January, 1 July, 4 July, 31 October and 31 December. On any ordinary evening they are banned. A beach fire is the legal way to mark an evening instead, but only at two beaches.

Fires are allowed only at Mackenzie Beach, officially renamed tinwis, and Chesterman Beach, between 8 AM and 10 PM, subject to current fire bans. Elsewhere, including Cox Bay, Tonquin and Long Beach, fires are not permitted at all. Where fires are allowed they must sit in a clean-burning appliance raised off the sand, stay smaller than 0.6 m by 0.6 m, keep at least 3 m from vegetation and be supervised by someone 16 or older.

The District's Beach Guidance

The District encourages a 5-minute beach clean-up, removing even small amounts of marine debris. The point is to stop that debris harming marine life and polluting the ocean. Visitors are asked to leave no trace so the beaches stay enjoyable for everyone.

The District also follows Pack In, Pack Out guidance: pick up after your dog, pack out all garbage including small items like food wrappers, plastic or cigarette butts, and use designated trash or recycling bins where they exist.

Why This Matters At Sunset

An evening crowd often arrives with drinks, snacks and camera gear. On a beach with no bins nearby, that means more left behind than on a typical daytime visit. Tonquin is the beach the District itself names for sunset, so it sees this pattern most.

Carry a bag in, take everything out, and give the sand a 5-minute scan before you go.
