Tofino Hotels: The Village and Near-Village Options

A village room's biggest advantage over a beach or resort property is the walk itself, so confirm the actual distance to the harbour and to Campbell and Main Streets before booking, since "downtown Tofino" gets used loosely in listings. If a tour's confirmation says check-in at the Marine Adventure Centre, a room at Tofino Resort and Marina removes the drive entirely, since several boat tours check in on site there. A village inn with no on-site parking is common, and Tofino's core streets are walkable but narrow, so ask about parking before arriving with a car.

You do not need a rental car for a hotel stay in the village itself. The local bus is West Coast Transit, run by BC Transit, and an adult fare is US$3.55 (C$5.00) for a single ride or US$7.10 (C$10.00) for a day pass.

Parking works in your favour too. The District of Tofino charges pay parking at US$2.13 (C$3) an hour or US$10.65 (C$15) a day, enforced 8am to 11pm daily, but only at Tonquin Beach, tinwis (formerly MacKenzie Beach), Chesterman Beach and Cox Bay. None of those is the village. If your hotel is in the village and you walk to the harbour, you pay nothing at all.

That walking distance matters for boat trips as well. Several of the tours listed in the what to check section on this page check in on-site at Tofino Resort and Marina, so a guest staying there needs no transport for those departures. The water is at the door.

A Tofino hotel room carries three taxes on top of the listed rate. GST is the 5% federal tax. PST is the 8% British Columbia short-term accommodation rate. MRDT is Tofino's own municipal and regional district tax at 3%, raised from 2% to 3% in 2016. Added together, that is a 16% stack on the room rate before any property fee.

Not every Tofino boat tour checks in at the same spot, and it changes which village hotel keeps a morning short. Tofino sits on an exposed Pacific-facing coastline with a genuine earthquake and tsunami risk from the Cascadia Subduction Zone, and the District of Tofino publishes an official Tsunami Safety Guide and Evacuation Map covering the whole town, village included. A village hotel is generally on slightly higher ground than a beachfront property, but this page does not state a specific evacuation route for any address. Ask your hotel's front desk about its own evacuation plan on check-in, and read the full local guidance on Tofino safety.

A village hotel still sits at the end of a specific trip in. Harbour Air flies Vancouver's downtown Coal Harbour to Tofino Harbour in roughly 45 minutes, with seaplane service running spring through summer and a wheeled winter service instead using Vancouver International Airport's South Terminal and Tofino-Long Beach Airport. Pacific Coastal Airlines runs the year-round, all-weather alternative on the same YVR South to YAZ route, about 46 minutes on a Saab 340, with multiple daily departures. Driving in on Highway 4, the Kennedy Hill Safety Improvement Project finished in spring 2023, though planned closures still happen on this road, so check DriveBC before you leave rather than assuming a clear run. However you arrive, a village hotel keeps the last leg short: the harbour, where Harbour Air lands and several boat tours check in, is a walk from most village rooms rather than a second drive.

Once you land or drive in, the last stretch into the village is short either way: the harbour where Harbour Air's floatplanes touch down sits within walking distance of most village rooms, and the same is true of the boat tours that check in nearby. Confirm your arrival method with the hotel ahead of time if you are landing by seaplane, since a few village properties can arrange a short pickup from the Harbour Air dock.
