Tofino Restaurants: Where to Eat in Town

Where and when it began

Tacofino began in June 2009 as one orange food truck parked at 1184 Pacific Rim Hwy, founded by Jason Sussman, Kaeli Robinsong and Amy Bockner. That lot sits on the road into town, so most visitors drive past it on the way in from the national park. More than fifteen years later the original truck is still there, in the same spot, serving what the company calls West Coast Beach Food.

Very few Canadian restaurants can claim an unchanged original address for that long, and fewer still began in a surf-town parking lot. The founding story matters because it explains the rest of the brand. What started as a single truck now counts roughly a dozen locations across British Columbia, which makes the Tofino original one of the most consequential things this small town has exported.

The truck's founders went on to build a company with locations in Victoria and beyond, but the highway lot remains the true starting point and still draws a line of wetsuited customers on summer afternoons.

Two places to eat it in Tofino

Tacofino runs two Tofino locations, and both list the same hours on the company's own site: Sun-Sat 11am-7pm. The first is the original highway truck at 1184 Pacific Rim Hwy. The second is a sit-down spot at 450 Campbell St in the village, which is the better choice if you want a table, a roof in the rain, or a stop between the coffee shops and the brewery on a Campbell Street errand run.

Both locations take online ordering through Toast for pickup, and the company runs a loyalty program, so a repeat visitor can order ahead and skip the queue at the highway lot. One practical note that surprises people: the company's own website prints no menu prices anywhere in its public pages. You will see the menu, but not the numbers, until you order or order ahead.

Plan for the 7pm close, which is earlier than many visitors expect, and earlier than every dinner room on this page.

The wider truck story

Tacofino was not the only truck that mattered here. In 2003, chef Lisa Ahier started SoBo as a purple food truck behind a Tofino surf shop, and SoBo later became one of the first food trucks ever named to enRoute's Top 10 Best New Restaurants in Canada before moving into its bricks-and-mortar home on Neill Street. That history is worth one sentence of context because it frames the whole scene.

Within a few years, trucks parked in gravel lots in a town of two thousand people were being judged alongside the country's best new dining rooms, and winning. The pattern set the template that a generation of BC food businesses followed. If you came to Tofino for surfing and found the food scene just as serious, this is why.

The ocean-to-truck-to-bricks pipeline started here, on the Pacific Rim Highway and behind a surf shop, long before food halls in Vancouver made trucks fashionable.

Wolf in the Fog

Wolf in the Fog sits at 150 Fourth St, Tofino, BC V0R 2Z0, and the phone number is 250-725-WOLF (9653). Dinner is served daily from 5pm to late. The restaurant opened in the summer of 2014 and was named Air Canada enRoute's Best New Restaurant in Canada for that same year, which remains the single biggest restaurant award any Tofino kitchen has collected.

The kitchen describes its own cooking as ingredient-driven 'Tofitian' cuisine, built on fresh local catches and foraged ingredients from Tofino's oceans, shorelines and forests. In practice that means the menu reads like a map of Clayoquot Sound rather than a list of cuisine types, and it shifts with what the water and forest give up. Reservations for up to six guests are taken through Exploretock, and walk-ins are welcome, which makes a solo or last-minute dinner realistic even in a small town.

As with everything on this page, no menu prices are printed on the restaurant's own site, so budget on arrival rather than from the website.

Shelter Restaurant

Shelter Restaurant occupies 634 Campbell Street, Tofino, BC V0R 2Z0, inside the Tofino Resort + Marina property, and can be reached on 250-725-3353. It opens daily from 7:30am to 11:00pm, which gives it the widest service window of any venue on this page. Breakfast here before a boat, lunch after a surf, and a late dinner all work at the same address.

The menu is published in sections covering Cafe, Lunch, Dinner, Cocktails, Beer, Cider, Wine and Hot Drinks, and it is built around local seafood, salads and burgers. One correction to a common assumption: the current menu carries no pizza. The restaurant did run a single 'Pizza Delivery Night' with the Tofino Volunteer Fire Department, where firefighters delivered pizzas house to house and checked smoke alarms, but that was a community fire-safety event, not a menu item.

The resort connection has a practical upside. Tofino Resort + Marina is the operator that runs the whale watching and other marine tours, checking guests in at its Marine Adventure Centre, so you can eat at Shelter and walk to your boat check-in at the same property.

Rhino Coffee House

Rhino Coffee House sits at 430 Campbell Street, right in the village strip, and its own site states it opened in 2013. The operation goes deeper than a cafe. A sister company, Rhino Coffee Roasters, small-batch roasts organic, globally sourced beans in Tofino itself and ships direct to customers across Canada and the United States, which is a genuinely unusual thing for a town this size to support.

The cafe bakes fresh daily, and its signature item is a stuffed doughnut called the 'Bro Nut', which has become the thing returning visitors order by name. On a rainy morning, Rhino is within easy walking distance of both Tacofino Cantina at 450 Campbell St and Shelter at 634 Campbell St, so the whole Campbell Street stretch can be covered on foot between coffee, lunch and dinner reservations. No menu prices are printed on the cafe's own site pages, so bring a card and order from the board.

Common Loaf Bake Shop

Common Loaf Bake Shop is at 180 First Street, phone 250-725-3915, and its Tourism Tofino business listing calls it Tofino's original whole foods bake shop, founded in 1975. That makes it the oldest food business on this page by a wide margin, pre-dating the taco truck by three decades and the brewery by thirty-six years. The listing confirms vegan and gluten-free options alongside the regular baking, which matters in a surf town where dietary requirements arrive from every direction.

Common Loaf also carries three certifications worth noting for travellers who care where their money goes: BC Green Business, Get Wild, and Tribal Park Allies, the last of which supports Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks through a business contribution program. The bakery's hours are not stated on the official listing, so call the number above before planning an early stop, and note that it sits on First Street at the quiet end of the village rather than on the main Campbell strip.

Tofino Brewing Company

Tofino Brewing Company pours at 691 Industrial Way, phone 250-725-2899, and opened in April 2011. It brands itself proudly brewed in British Columbia since 2011, runs on hydroelectric energy, and is registered as an ocean-friendly business through Surfrider. Summer taproom hours run Mon-Wed 12pm-9pm and Thu-Sun 12pm-10pm, with no reservations taken, so it is first come, first served.

The current tap list is long and worth reading at the bar: Tofino Lager, Blonde Ale, Tuff Session Ale, Ethereal IPA, Kelp Stout, Cosmic Wave Double IPA, Pilsner, Sunshine Daydream Sour, Light Wave XPA, Surfeza, Hazy IPA, Spruce Tree Ale and Porter. The brewery won the Wild Ale category at the 2022 BC Beer Awards for its Barreled Series Batch #001, and took 3rd place in the Dark Lager category at the 2023 BC Beer Awards. Food comes from warm pretzels and bar snacks in-house, plus a food truck partner, Picnic at the Brewery, serving grilled sandwiches and charcuterie.

Dogs are allowed on patios only, and kids are welcome with adult supervision.

Every restaurant on this page was checked against its own website or an official Tourism Tofino listing for its address, its hours and its history before it was named. That bar sounds low until you try to clear it for the rest of the town. Tofino restaurants, as a rule, do not publish menu prices on their own sites, and none of the six venues here does, which is why you will find no dish prices anywhere on this page.

What you will find is verifiable: founding dates, street addresses, phone numbers and service hours that a visitor can act on.

The award picture is narrower than tourism copy suggests. The Michelin Guide's coverage of this region extends to hotels only. Its Key list includes the Wickaninnish Inn with One Key and Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge with Three Keys, but Michelin's restaurant guide is scoped to the City of Vancouver and contains no Tofino restaurant at all.

No Tofino restaurant carries a Michelin star or a Bib Gourmand. Canada's 100 Best Restaurants 2026 lists no Tofino restaurant in its top 100 either. The two genuine restaurant recognitions on this page are Wolf in the Fog's enRoute Best New Restaurant win in 2014 and Tofino Brewing Company's BC Beer Awards placements in 2022 and 2023.

Sustainability claims need the same caution. No dated official Ocean Wise page listing which specific Tofino restaurants currently hold partner status was found on this check, so no venue here is described as Ocean Wise certified, even where third-party coverage references Ocean Wise-sourced seafood. Local certification is easier to source.

Common Loaf's listing confirms its BC Green Business, Get Wild and Tribal Park Allies status, and the brewery's own site confirms its Surfrider registration.

One honest gap deserves its own note. No official source confirms a dedicated pizzeria operating in Tofino. Shelter's menu lists no pizza, and the bakery item sometimes photographed as a breakfast pizza could not be confirmed as a standing menu item on any official source.
