The Race for the Blue Tuna Shoot-Out is a week-long fishing competition hosted by Tofino Resort + Marina every early September since 2018. Because it is tied to a specific operator and an early September window, it is also one of the few events connected to a business you can contact directly for current status.

For surfers and spectators alike it is genuinely worth seeing: the standard of surfing is high and the beach atmosphere in May is lively.

Surf contests are also weather dependent by nature, with organizers waiting on swell and conditions before locking final heats.

For food-focused travelers it has historically been the best single reason to visit Tofino in the quiet season, when the town slows down and the storms start arriving.

The word typically in the source account is itself a soft signal that the festival has not run on a guaranteed schedule in every recent year. The Tofino Shorebird Festival ran the last weekend of April, up until 2020. It was a nature-focused event timed to the spring shorebird migration, when tens of thousands of birds pass through the mudflats and beaches of the region on their way north. Guided walks, talks and boat trips made it popular with birders, and late April is genuinely a good time to see the migration even without a festival.

The practical point for planning is that it has not run since 2020, and we found no evidence of it resuming. If you are interested in shorebirds and spring birding, you do not need the festival: the birds arrive on their own schedule, and local guides operate independently of any event. Check with Tourism Tofino for current nature tour operators, or simply walk the mudflats at low tide with a good field guide.

April travel has other advantages too, with fewer visitors than summer and the forests at their greenest after the winter rain. Just do not build a trip around a festival that ended in 2020, no matter what an old article told you.

Tofino Food And Wine Festival

The Tofino Food and Wine Festival ran the first weekend of June for 14 years, and it is now described in the past tense in the sourced account of Tofino's events. That is a clear signal it is no longer a going concern, though no exact final year is stated in what we checked. In its time it paired regional wines with local food in a weekend of tastings, and it filled what would otherwise be a quiet early June weekend.

The Tofino Lantern Festival was an August fundraiser for the Raincoast Education Society, and it was once voted Tofino's most popular event. Because it was genuinely beloved, articles about it still circulate widely, and it remains one of the most searched Tofino events by name.

That is exactly why we are stating its status clearly: it is not happening. If you were picturing an evening of paper lanterns in a garden, adjust the plan. What August offers instead is the height of summer on the coast, with the warmest water of the year for surfing, long daylight hours, and the Tofino Market in full swing every Saturday.

The Raincoast Education Society itself continues its work and runs interpretive programs and walks, so if supporting environmental education on the coast appeals to you, that is the direct route rather than a defunct fundraiser. For a summer evening activity, a sunset walk on Chesterman Beach or an evening whale-watching departure will fill the slot the lanterns used to occupy. Check the society's own site for any new events before assuming anything you read elsewhere is current.
