Pacific Rim National Park Pass

Parks Canada's fee page states the dollar figures clearly but does not spell out, on the page we could read, whether payment runs through a self-pay station at the lots or an online option, so this site does not print a purchase mechanic it cannot confirm. What is confirmed: the fee is a per-vehicle-day charge tied to being stopped inside the Long Beach Unit, and Parks Canada's guidance is general rather than slot-based, arrive early on a busy day rather than book a time. If a self-pay station at the main lots is out of order or out of change on the day you visit, that is the kind of detail worth checking at the Kwisitis Visitor Centre or the Pacific Rim Visitor Centre near Ucluelet before you drive in.

Inside the Long Beach Unit, the pass applies: Long Beach itself, Wickaninnish Beach beside the Kwisitis Visitor Centre, and every trailhead on the trails list. Outside the park boundary, nothing is charged at all.

The park boundary follows a strip along the highway rather than the town limits, so a beach's distance from the village tells you nothing about whether it is free. Long Beach is the one to remember: it is the park's headline sand, and it is also the one that costs money.

The maths is straightforward once the numbers are side by side. Four adult day passes at US$8.69 (C$12.25) each come to US$34.78 (C$49), already close to three-quarters of the US$118.89 (C$167.50) annual family Discovery Pass, and the annual pass covers up to 7 people in a vehicle rather than one adult. Anyone planning more than about four separate park days in a year, or planning to combine this trip with a visit to another Parks Canada site elsewhere in the country within the same 12 months, comes out ahead on the annual pass.

A single weekend trip with one or two park days almost never clears that bar, and the day-pass tiers above are the ones to use.

A few things a first-time visitor assumes are bundled into the park pass are not. For everything else the trip involves, the Tofino homepage is the starting point.

• Camping at Green Point Campground is booked and paid separately from the day pass
• Guided tours, including the bike and hike tour, are priced on top of the pass, not instead of it
• Hot Springs Cove sits in a different park entirely, Nism̓aakqin Park, run by BC Parks rather than Parks Canada, and charges no entry fee of its own; the cost there is the boat or floatplane, covered on Hot Springs Cove
• The Broken Group Islands and the West Coast Trail units have their own separate systems and are not reached with this day pass at all

Pacific Rim National Park Reserve sells its own single-park annual pass, a different and cheaper product from the cross-Canada Discovery Pass covered earlier. The Beach Walk rate is a pedestrian-only admission valid up to 4 hours, at four named lots only: Long Beach, Kwisitis, Incinerator and Wickaninnish.

Which One Actually Fits

Choose the park's own annual pass if you will return to Pacific Rim itself many times in a year with no other Parks Canada site planned. Choose the cross-Canada Discovery Pass instead if a second national park or historic site anywhere in the country is on the year's itinerary. Choose the Beach Walk rate for a short stop, an hour on the sand plus the Kwisitis Visitor Centre exhibits, then back in the car, but buy the regular day pass instead if you also plan to walk the Rainforest Trail or spend the day at Long Beach, since the 4-hour limit and the four-lot restriction rule it out for a full day.

A commercial group day rate exists at US$7.40 (C$10.42) per person, per day. This applies to anyone arriving with a guided tour or an organized group rather than in a single family or group vehicle. If your bus tour includes park entry in the ticket price, this is the rate the operator pays for you.

The Discovery Pass, already introduced here at the family/group rate of US$118.89 (C$167.50), also sells individual tiers. An adult pass is US$59.27 (C$83.50) and a senior pass is US$50.75 (C$71.50). These suit a solo traveller, or a couple travelling separately, who expect to visit several Parks Canada sites across Canada within the year.

If Pacific Rim is your only planned park and you are visiting once, the plain day pass is cheaper than any annual product. Match the tier to the trip, not the other way round.

Parks Canada ran a promotion called the Canada Strong Pass. It offered free admission to national parks and discounted camping. That promotion has ended.

The last day of free admission under it was the day before the current fee schedule took effect. Visitors who remember reading about free entry to Canadian national parks were almost certainly thinking of that promotion. It is not currently running.

The full fee ladder on this page, from the Beach Walk rate up through day passes and annual passes, is what actually applies at the gate now. Budget for admission accordingly and do not arrive expecting the gates to be free.
