Tofino Fishing Charters: Licences, Seasons and Species

The Tidal Waters Licence

Everyone who fishes or harvests shellfish in British Columbia's tidal waters needs a licence. That includes anglers casting from the beach, not just people on boats, and it includes anyone transporting a catch. You must carry the licence with you while fishing or while moving your fish, so keep a printed or digital copy on you for the whole trip, not just at the moment you hook something. Under 16s fish free, which makes a family day on the water cheaper than you might expect.

The price ladder for 2026/2027 works like this. A resident annual licence for ages 16 to 64 costs US$18.35 (C$25.86). A resident annual senior licence for 65 and over costs US$9.61 (C$13.54). If you are visiting, the resident tiers do not apply, so look at the short-term options instead: a 5-day licence runs US$13.98 (C$19.70) for residents and US$27.10 (C$38.18) for non-residents, and a 1-day licence is US$4.59 (C$6.46) for residents or US$6.12 (C$8.62) for non-residents. If you are staying longer than five days or planning return trips within the year, the non-resident annual licence at US$88.30 (C$124.41) can work out cheaper than stacking short-term licences.

Licences are bought online through the National Recreational Licensing System or, in some cases, in person through an Independent Access Provider. There is one important wrinkle for visitors. Non-residents fishing for halibut in specific management areas must buy their licence from an in-Canada Independent Access Provider rather than printing one at home. If halibut is the target of your trip and you are not a Canadian resident, sort this out before you arrive so it does not cost you a day on the water.

Species And Season

Tofino's fishing calendar is long, and one species never really leaves. Chinook salmon are available year-round, which is why winter charter trips still happen here when other ports have shut down. Coho salmon arrive in summer and fall, and albacore tuna show up in the same window, giving the late-summer fishery a second gear.

The groundfish side of the calendar runs April through November. That bottom-fishing season covers halibut, lingcod and rockfish, species that live near the sea floor and are taken on bait or jig setups rather than by trolling. If your ideal day is dropping lines over a reef and coming home with white fish for the barbecue, plan inside that April to November stretch.

Shellfish deserve their own mention. Spot prawns and Dungeness crab are a winter and spring highlight in Tofino, so the shoulder season here is not empty water. Pulling prawn or crab traps on a short trip is a genuinely popular format in its own right, and it pairs well with the sightseeing tours that run on the same water, like the Big Tree Trail and crabbing tour.

What A Charter Trip Looks Like

Charter operators in Tofino generally work to three trip formats. A full day is roughly ten hours on the water, the format for tuna or a serious halibut run if you do not mind a long day in the swells. A half day runs five to six hours and suits most first-time visitors who want a real fishing experience without committing the whole day. The shortest format is a crabbing or prawning trip of three to four hours, more about pulling traps and learning the shellfish fishery than offshore fishing.

Be upfront with yourself about the season when you choose a format. A half day in the bottom-fishing window can be very productive close to port, while a full day gives the boat time to travel to where the fish actually are on a slow day. The three-to-four-hour shellfish trip most often runs outside peak season, matching the winter and spring prawn and crab highlight.

After You Catch It

A good half day can produce more fish than you can eat before it spoils, and Tofino has a small processing industry built around exactly that problem. St. Jeans Cannery operates a drop-off location at Tofino Resort+Marina, right where many boat trips start and finish, an easy last stop before you drive out of town. You hand over your catch and the cannery handles cleaning, filleting, vacuum packing, canning or smoking depending on what you order.

Two other processors serve the same purpose. Naas Foods and West Pacific Seafoods both offer sport fishing processing for catch that will not be eaten within a couple of days. If you are flying home, ask the processor about packaging that travels well and about what your airline allows, since frozen and vacuum-packed fish has different handling rules from a cooler of loose fillets. If you are driving, a smoker can turn a modest catch into something that keeps for weeks. Either way, factor processing into your budget on top of the charter and the licence, since it is a per-fish or per-pound service rather than an included extra. Keep your licence handy during transport, since the requirement to carry it while moving your catch applies on the dock as much as on the water.
