Tofino Costs: What a Day Here Really Adds Up To

Federal GST applies nationwide at 5%. British Columbia charges PST at 8% on short-term accommodation, a point higher than its general 7% rate on most goods. On top of both sits Tofino's own Municipal and Regional District Tax at 3%, raised from 2% to 3% in 2016.

Our sum of the three is 16% on top of the room rate, before any fee the property itself chooses to add.

What the MRDT pays for

The Municipal and Regional District Tax is Tofino's own layer. The District raised it from 2% to 3% in 2016, with most of the increase earmarked to help fund a new visitor centre at Cox Bay. You pay it on every qualifying short-term stay in town.

Why the room is the whole ball game

At 16%, a week of Tofino nights adds nearly a sixth of the room rate again in tax. Since no official source prints a room price in the first place, the practical move is to compare actual rates on your dates in where to stay in Tofino, then add 16%. Every figure below comes from the charging body or the operator. The park pass covers the Long Beach Unit of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, the road-accessible stretch between Tofino and Ucluelet. Beach parking is a separate District of Tofino charge at the in-town beach lots, not a park fee.

The annual option

If you will visit the park more than twice in a year, the Parks Canada Discovery Pass family/group annual pass at US$118.89 (C$167.50) beats repeated day passes. Two day visits for a group of up to seven already come close to its price.

Getting here is priced too

BC Ferries charges adults US$14.91 (C$21.00) at-terminal on the Horseshoe Bay-Departure Bay and Tsawwassen-Duke Point routes, with Saver fares from US$10.65 (C$15.00) and vehicle-and-driver Saver fares from US$34.78 (C$49.00) up to US$70.27 (C$99.00) depending on demand. The beaches inside the town are outside the national park, so there is no pass to buy for them. Walk-on access and the big trail network cost nothing. Here is what a zero-fee day looks like.

• Chesterman Beach, Mackenzie Beach and Tonquin Beach: in-town District beaches, outside the park, so no park pass applies. The trail from downtown to Tonquin Beach is a short walk of roughly 10 to 15 minutes.
• The ʔapsčiik t̓ašii pathway: a 25 km paved multi-use path through the park connecting Tofino and Ucluelet, free to walk or ride.
• Rainforest Trail A and B: 1 km boardwalk loops each, through old-growth coastal rainforest. Walking them on foot without parking at a park lot incurs no charge, though driving into the Long Beach Unit for other stops needs the day pass.
• Whale watching from shore: a resident group of grey whales stays in Clayoquot Sound waters year-round, so sightings from the coast are possible without buying a tour.
• The Wild Pacific Trail in Ucluelet: free to walk, with the Lighthouse Loop at 2.5 km the most popular segment.
• Youth 17 and under enter Pacific Rim National Park Reserve free, which makes a family park day cheaper than the adult numbers suggest.

Food

No official source we read, from Tourism Tofino to the District to the restaurants' own sites, publishes a menu price for a coffee, a taco or a dinner in Tofino. The town's famous names, Tacofino, SoBo, Wolf in the Fog, all keep pricing off the pages we can verify. Our position is simple: we would rather say so than print a number someone made up.

Budget by asking yourself what you normally spend on meals, then assume a remote resort town runs above that.

A Room

There is no published Tofino room rate either. The town has about 2,516 residents and a seasonal visitor economy, and accommodation spans everything from campsites to the Michelin-Keyed Wickaninnish Inn. What is published is the tax stack, covered above.

A room in Tofino is also a seasonal price, so the same bed can list very differently in August than in November, which is another reason a single printed figure would mislead more than it would help.

Gas and the Ferry

No official source publishes a per-litre gas price specific to Tofino, or a taxi tariff. Fuel on a peninsula at the end of Highway 4 is a real line item for drivers, and we cannot verify a figure, so we print none. If you are weighing the ferry-and-drive route against flying, vancouver to tofino lays out both, fare by fare, so at least the crossing itself is priced even where the fuel in between is not.

These are the charges people meet after they have already planned around the headline prices.

• Beach parking is enforced 08:00 to 23:00. The hourly rate is US$2.13 (C$3.00), so a long day at Chesterman or Cox Bay costs more than the US$10.65 (C$15.00) daily cap only if you stay under it. Pay the day rate if you are staying long.
• The park pass and beach parking are two different charges. The Pacific Rim day pass covers the Long Beach Unit. The meters at Chesterman, Mackenzie, Cox Bay and Tonquin belong to the District of Tofino. Visitors pay one and assume it covers the other.
• Long Beach sits between Tofino and Ucluelet, not in town. Driving there means a park pass for the vehicle occupants. Walking onto the in-town beaches is free.
• The Meares Island trail asks a suggested donation of US$3.55 (C$5.00) per adult on arrival, on top of the US$28.39 (C$40.00) water taxi fare.
• The Tofino Express coach has no published fare table at all. The price of your leg shows only inside the operator's own booking tool, so check it there rather than trusting any figure quoted elsewhere.
• Both the whale and bear watching tours cost $136.00 per person either way. The bear watching tour is not suitable for anyone under 4 ft 8 in (145 cm), which catches some families out and can mean swapping to a different tour.
