Victoria to Tofino: Drive, Bus or Fly

From Victoria, the route runs north on the Island Highway before turning onto Highway 4 westbound toward Port Alberni, then continuing over to the west coast and into Tofino. The full distance runs roughly 315 to 340 km one way, by far the longest single drive covered on this site. Highway 4's Kennedy Hill section, once the road's chronic single-lane bottleneck, finished its realignment in spring 2023, but planned closures for maintenance still happen on the corridor, so check DriveBC before setting out rather than assuming the road is clear.

No reliable driving-time figure is published for the full Victoria-Tofino leg, so plan around the distance rather than a quoted number of hours, and build in a stop at Port Alberni, the last town of any size before the coast.

Fuel and Stops

Port Alberni sits roughly at the midpoint of the Highway 4 portion of this drive and is the last reliable place to fill up before the road climbs and winds toward the coast. Cathedral Grove, a stand of old-growth Douglas fir inside MacMillan Provincial Park, sits on Highway 4 west of Parksville and is a common stop for drivers coming from either Victoria or Nanaimo; detail on that stop is on Cathedral Grove.

The Same Kennedy Hill Climb

West of Port Alberni, this route joins the same Highway 4 stretch used from Nanaimo, including the Kennedy Hill section, once a chronic single-lane bottleneck. A realignment project widened and eased the grade, finishing in spring 2023, though the highway still closes for planned maintenance on some days unrelated to that old issue. From Victoria, that means checking DriveBC matters just as much as it does on the shorter Nanaimo to Tofino version of the same road, since the two routes converge for the whole second half of the drive.

Island Link operates the Tofino Express, serving Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Ucluelet and Tofino. The operator's own site does not publish a fare table, only a booking tool, so this page prints no bus fare for the Victoria leg. Bookings can be made until midnight the day before travel, with same-day availability checked separately.

A separate, older service branded VI Connector and Tofino Bus is not currently operating, so confirm you are booking with Island Link directly rather than an outdated listing. There is no scheduled airline connecting Victoria directly to Tofino or to Tofino-Long Beach Airport (YAZ). Travellers who want to fly rather than drive typically route through Vancouver instead, using either Harbour Air's seasonal seaplane from Coal Harbour or Pacific Coastal Airlines' year-round service from YVR's South Terminal, both detailed on Vancouver to Tofino and Tofino airport and flights. For most Victoria-based travellers, the direct Highway 4 drive stays the simpler option since it avoids a return trip toward Vancouver first.

Starting from Victoria removes BC Ferries entirely from the trip, along with its terminal lineups and sailing schedule, since the whole route stays on Vancouver Island. That is a real advantage over Vancouver to Tofino, where a ferry crossing or a flight is unavoidable. The cost is length: at roughly 315-340 km one way, this is the longest single drive on this site's route pages, close to double the roughly 195-200 km from Nanaimo.

For a trip that starts and ends in Victoria, or continues on to other parts of Vancouver Island, the no-ferry route makes sense on its own logic. For a trip that starts on the mainland, flying or ferrying to Nanaimo first and driving the shorter leg from there is the more common pattern, covered on Nanaimo to Tofino.
