Mackenzie Beach (tinwis)

The District of Tofino's own beaches page now lists this beach as tinwis, formerly Mackenzie Beach, though the older name is still what appears on road signs, most maps and every accommodation listing nearby. What makes it different from Chesterman and Cox Bay is shelter: large tidal rocks offshore break up most of the wind and swell, leaving calm water with only the gentlest waves of any beach in town, per the District's own description. That single fact decides who this beach is for.

The District names beachcombing, stand-up paddleboarding, picnicking and casual games like bocce ball and frisbee as the beach's typical activities, all things that need calm water and flat sand rather than surf.

Getting There

Access is via Hellesen Drive and Mackenzie Beach Road, both reaching the same stretch of sheltered shoreline north of the village along the Pacific Rim Highway corridor. Public washrooms and shower facilities are at both access points, so a full beach day here needs nothing brought from town beyond food and water. Either road works as a starting point, and the choice mostly comes down to which side of the beach you plan to sit on for the day.

The Entrance Ramp And Mobi-Mat

The Hellesen Drive access has an entrance ramp and a Mobi-Mat, a portable rollout mat that firms up loose sand, which the District describes as facilitating beach access for everyone. Of the four town beaches in this group, this is the one built with mobility and stroller access in mind rather than left as sand and driftwood from the parking lot to the water. Anyone bringing a wheelchair, a jogging stroller or simply a cooler on wheels will find this the easiest beach in town to reach.

What Parking Costs

The same District of Tofino pay parking program that covers Chesterman, Cox Bay and Tonquin applies here, enforced daily 8 am to 11 pm year-round.

Sheltered does not mean staffed. There have been no lifeguards or Surf Guards on any Pacific Rim area beach since 2012, and that includes this one, even though its calm water makes it the natural choice for small children. Watch children in the water directly rather than from a beach chair, and keep an eye on the tidal rocks offshore, which are part of what makes the water calm but are also a real hazard to wade or climb on at the wrong tide.

In May 2025 the BC Geographical Names Office officially changed the name of Mackenzie Beach to tinwis, its traditional Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation name. The word is pronounced ti-nu-wis. The change restored a name the Tla-o-qui-aht have used for this shoreline for generations, and the District of Tofino has adopted tinwis as its own official name for the beach.

Visitors will notice that the wider world has not fully caught up. Most road signs, maps and booking listings still say Mackenzie Beach, and many people search for it under the old spelling. Both names refer to exactly the same stretch of sand.

If you are driving and relying on signage, look for Mackenzie Beach. If you are reading the District's own materials, expect to see tinwis. On this page we use the official name first but reference the old one where it helps you find your way.

Dogs are welcome here, and at every District beach, but they must stay on a leash at all times. The rule exists partly to protect migratory shorebirds that use Tofino's beaches as resting points on their journeys. Alcohol is prohibited on all public property in Tofino, including this beach, at any time of day.

If you want a drink, do it at a licensed patio instead. Sleeping overnight in your vehicle, RV, trailer or tent is not allowed anywhere in public areas of Tofino, and that includes the tinwis parking lot. Free camping is a common hope among road-trippers, but bylaw officers do enforce the ban, so plan on a paid campground.

Drone pilots should leave the aircraft at their accommodation. Drone use is legally restricted across the District because of the nearby Tofino Harbour Water Aerodrome and the Tofino-Long Beach Airport (YAZ). Finally, smoking and vaping are prohibited within 6 metres of recreation areas, including beaches, under Bylaw No. 1249.

In practice that means step well away from the sand and the access paths if you need to smoke.

The most common surprise is the water itself. Visitors who know Cox Bay or Chesterman expect rolling surf and find calm, sheltered water instead. Tinwis faces a different direction and sits protected by tidal rocks, so it is a wading and paddling beach rather than a surfing one.

Accessibility catches people out too. The Mobi-Mat and the entrance ramp are at the Hellesen Drive access point only. The other access does not have them, so if someone in your group needs the mat or ramp, park and enter at Hellesen Drive.

Fire rules cause confusion as well. Tinwis and Chesterman are the only Tofino beaches where fires are legal at all, so do not copy what you see here at any other beach. Last, treat the tidal rocks with respect.

They shelter the bay and give the beach its calm character, but they are also the main hazard here. The water looks gentle, yet the rocks are slippery, sharp and shift with the tide. Give them space rather than climbing on them.

A calm, sheltered bay draws families, and families draw picnics. That means more sandwich wrappers and stray bottle caps than you will find at the surf beaches, where wind and waves sweep litter away fast. Here it settles.

The District of Tofino asks every beachgoer to help with a five minute clean-up. Pick up even small amounts of marine debris as you walk. Litter harms marine life and pollutes the ocean, and small pieces are the ones animals swallow.

The District's Pack In, Pack Out guidance applies to your whole visit. Pick up after your dog and dispose of the waste properly. Pack out all garbage, including small items like food wrappers, plastic or cigarette butts.

Use the designated trash or recycling bins where they exist. Leave no trace so the beach stays enjoyable for everyone who comes after you. Five minutes with a pocket for collecting is all it takes.
